BUILD Wealth Series with Karen Dry: Open Enrollment
Presented by the Professional Women in Building of the BIA Bay Area

Most people gloss over their Open Enrollment with their employers. You receive an email and it basically says, ?if you?re not changing anything from last year, we?ll automatically enroll you with the same benefits.?

And if you?re a contractor or self-employed, you think the Open Enrollment period doesn?t matter for you. Well, did you know all health/medical insurance resets for premium paid and benefits included at each calendar year? What questions can you ask today to be sure you understand your options for 2022 when it comes to your health care and other risk management insurance?

Most individual?s lives change every year ? new partner, no partner, kids, injuries, health scares, compensation increases (or decreases), new jobs, etc. If you don?t understand your benefits before you go into the Open Enrollment period, you could make choices that you cannot change until the following year, causing regret, frustration and huge costs.

The open enrollment period is important because it is one of the few times you can make changes to many of your employer provided benefits. During open enrollment you have options to enroll in benefits for the first time, change your current plans or coverage amounts, or to drop coverage completely.

These benefits can include: health insurance, FSA plans, HSA plans, group term life insurance, group long term disability, vision and dental plans, 401k options, RSU options, deferred compensation options, cafeteria plans, pet insurance, and much more. Most HR professionals are not equipped to advise you on your financial security or retirement planning and your benefits play a key role in your planning whether you like to admit it or not.

This seminar will take you through a basic employer plan and how it may be different for some employees and/or contractors and the self-employed. We?ll review the glossary of terms, what is standard in the industry for benefits and what is not. The key here is to be better informed about what you have offered by your employer so that you pick the right benefits for your personal planning.
