• Union City Revisits Affordable Regs

  • Union City staff will recommend to the City Council on May 8, 2018, changes to the city’s affordable housing ordinance that would require residential rental developers to build units for low-income households within their projects but provide a by-right in-lieu fee option to for-sale developers. Planners argue that given the high cost of building 100 percent affordable projects constructed by the city or a nonprofit, the only way the city will gain units for low income families is to mandate their inclusion within market-rate buildings. BIA|Bay Area Executive Director for Governmental Affairs Lisa Vorderbrueggen will counter that the mandate may well result in zero units as developers and investors go elsewhere.
