• CC Central Sanitary Anticipates Large Fee Hikes

  • Central Contra Costa Sanitary District staff are projecting substantial connection fee increases each of the next three fiscal years , according to material presented during a meeting of BIA|Bay Area’s East Bay Regional Policy Committee on March 20, 2019. The sewer district says it needs to boost spending during those years for upgrades to its aging treatment plant and pipes. Based on the fee estimates, the connection fee could increase from the current $6,700 per single-family unit up to $10,951 in 2024, an increase of $4,251 or 63 percent. BIA representatives voiced concern about the potentially dramatic fee increase and will continue to monitor Central San’s annual rate-setting process. Staff emphasized that actual rate increases could be less depending on the construction schedule and other factors. The agency is also studying a possible monthly service hike, which would be dedicated in its entirety toward funding the system upgrades. Central San provides wastewater collection, treatment and disposal services in Alamo, Danville, Lafayette, Moraga, Orinda, Pleasant Hill, Walnut Creek; portions of Martinez and San Ramon; and unincorporated communities within central Contra Costa County. Central San also cleans the wastewater from the cities of Concord and Clayton. For questions or comments, contact BIA’s Lisa Vorderbrueggen at 925-348-1956 or lvorderbrueggen@biabayarea.org.
