• Bridge Toll Hike Headed to Polls

  • The Metropolitan Transportation Commission approved placing a series of bridge toll hikes before voters on the June 5 ballot that would finance a $4.45 billion congestion relief funding package for the San Francisco Bay Area. If approved, tolls would increase by $1 starting on Jan. 1, 2019, and increase another $1 in 2019, 2022 and 2025. Among the major projects included in Regional Measure 3 include expanding BART’s railcar fleet; extending BART to downtown San Jose and Santa Clara; extending Caltrain to downtown San Francisco; improving the westbound approach to the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge; constructing a direct connector between interstates 680 and 880 in Fremont; and upgrading the Interstate 680/Highway 4 interchange in Contra Costa County. RM 3 also would provide $50 million for planning and preliminary engineering of a second rail tube connecting the East Bay and San Francisco.
