• BIA Opposes City of San Mateo Multifamily Housing Moratorium

  • On Monday, March 5, 2018, the San Mateo City Council will deliberate on adoption of an Urgency Ordinance imposing a 90 day moratorium on specified rental housing developments with the threat of extending the moratorium for up to two years. The City is claiming that the City Charter conflicts with provisions of newly passed State legislation AB1505 which authorizes cities to require that developments set aside 15% of units as affordable in rental projects. City Staff is therefore proposing to impose a moratorium on rental housing developments until a Charter amendment can be placed on the ballot. An exception would be allowed for those projects that “voluntarily” agree to accept a condition that they will comply with the city’s current BMR requirement.
