The Professional Women in Building Council (PWB) of the Building Industry Association (BIA) is continually working to provide a positive environment where members of all gender identities can learn about educational opportunities, mentoring and advancing their business knowledge while promoting the home building industry through support of community organizations. Our series aims to be a support system for young professionals seeking non-linear career paths and to amplify established, diverse voices while building networks for the future generation.
Join us for our next virtual event "A Conversation with a Structural Engineer" Our guest speaker: |
|
Thuy Fontelera, S.E., LEED AP, Principal/Founder, Element Structural Engineers
As the founder of Element Structural Engineers, Thuy takes great pride in her firm’s commitment to engineering community together. With over 20 years of experience, Thuy and her team provide structural design and engineering services for a variety of project types. Along the way, she has grown Element from a one-person shop to a dynamic team of nineteen and growing. Thuy is especially passionate about affordable housing. As a teenager, she was inspired by an instructor to take the path of architecture. However, during this time, she lost her sister. With the financial burdens that followed, it left her family without a home. That experience sparked Thuy’s desire to help the homeless and people in need. Eventually, her architectural influence led her to study civil engineering at Cal Poly SLO, and she became a licensed structural engineer. In recent years, Thuy and the Element team have worked on various affordable housing projects, including multi-family housing and senior housing developments. She considers these to be some of her greatest successes, and finds it to be “great for the spirit.” Thuy continues to be motivated by the energy and enthusiasm of her team, and encourages them all to dream big. Thuy understands the importance and responsibility in growing our future pipeline of engineers. She volunteers her time to Mission Valley ROP's student engineering program as an industry advisor. |
