• MTC Releases Winter 2017 Regional "Vital Signs" Update--Housing Supply Still Lags

  • As part of the regional planning activities associated with Plan Bay Area, MTC tracks certain Bay Area economic, social, and environmental metrics. MTC recently published an update [attached] of these "Vital Signs" metrics that will be considered at a meeting of MTC's Planning Committee on Friday, February 10. Among the key findings: while Bay Area job growth has now reached and exceeded the prior 2000 peak, "housing permitting has stalled in the last few years despite rapidly growing rents and home prices" and "inadequate housing remains the Achilles heel of an otherwise vibrant region." The update also shines a light on the displacement of working households out of the Bay Area due to the region's high housing costs.
